What Makes an Amish Dining Table, Amish?

The popularity of durable and beautiful handcrafted hardwood dining tables and furniture remains strong, even as many have bent more toward a” throw-away” culture in recent years. The problem is that a lot of “Amish” furniture out there isn’t Amish at all.

How can you tell the difference?

If you’re looking for an authentic Amish or Mennonite table from formal to rustic for your home that you won’t have to replace in only a few years, here are a few key characteristics to look for:

  1. Made from 100% locally-grown solid wood (including the drawers).
  2. Contains no particle board or laminate.
  3. Mortise & tenon joinery and dovetailed drawers
  4. It’s made in actual Amish or Mennonite wood shops.
  5. The finish is several layers of high-quality catalyzed varnish that withstands water and household chemicals, no water mark worries.

It’s rare to find dining tables with all five characteristics online or in mainstream furniture stores.

Buying a quality dining table you’ll enjoy and that will last for decades is a considerable commitment. You want to be sure you’re getting the exact handcrafted quality table you want, so you can enjoy years of hassle-free use. Our friendly and helpful staff is here to help you with answers to your questions as you make this purchase.

Custom Made Dining Tables

Check out the unique custom dining tables we’ve helped customers design exactly to their specs!

Live Edge Slab Dining Tables

These custom-made, live edge slab tables are one-of-a-kind and made to order. Our tables are handmade using large thick slabs of hardwood in various thicknesses that allow the beautiful natural wood grain to show through. The edge of these tables still has the thick inner (cambium layer) bark connected. Your can even choose to have them finished with the raw outer bark, which is often more than an inch thick, for a more rustic appearance. The wood species varies from cherry, oak, black walnut, maple, hickory, elm, white oak, sycamore – all locally grown in the USA.

We stock a large selection of live-edge slabs in lengths as long as 14' and widths to over 48".

The return for many to a more rustic design aesthetic has led to a rise in the popularity of butcher block tables and farmhouse style dining tables, still others continue to enjoy the formal styles.
